Go Look at the Moon

Charlotte has always loved the moon, and when her son was growing up, she made sure he looked up too. From quick trips to the front yard to late-night drives to watch the moon rise over the ocean, it became something they shared. Now that he’s away at college, he’s the one sending the text: “Mom, go look at the moon.” A Sunday Seed about wonder, connection, and the unexpected things we pass along to the people we love.

Hey, friend. Welcome to Sunday Seed. I'm Charlotte Edwards, and I believe small seeds create big impact. Each week, we'll plant one. Let's dig in. I have a thing about the moon. I always have. Even when I was a little girl, wherever I was, I would look up. I don't have a great story about why I started loving the moon. I just did. There's something magical about it to me. I don't even know how to explain it. I love looking up and seeing it shining against the dark sky. I've seen the moon thousands of times, and it still gets me. Even now, I can sit in my front yard at night and just stare at it. Sometimes I look up and think, "Wow, God created that. How lucky are we that we get to see something so beautiful?" And when my son came along, of course, I had to share my love of the moon with him. I was always running in the house and getting him to come outside and look at it with me. We'd talk about the moon, the stars, make wishes, and we would say a little prayer, "God, thank you for the moon." Some nights we'd run outside, look up for a minute, and then go right back in. Other nights, we'd sit out there and talk for a while Then there were the nights when looking from the front yard just wasn't quite cutting it, so we'd jump in the car, head downtown to the Battery, or we'd drive out to the beach to watch the moon rise. He was a trooper. He was usually up for one of his mom's adventures, and I got to share something I loved with him I remember one night we were sitting together in the sand out at Sullivan's. It was dark, and we were listening to the waves lap against the beach and waiting for the moon to rise. And we'd watch as the moon started coming up over the ocean. It was this beautiful red color, and from where we were sitting, it looked like the moon was coming right out of the water. It was spectacular. And as he got older, I kept calling him outside, and to his credit, he kept coming. I wasn't trying to teach him to love the moon. I loved it, and I wanted to share it with him. And now he's away at college, and every once in a while, I'll get a text from him. "Hi, Mom. Go outside and look at the moon. It's beautiful tonight." Those are some of my favorite texts. For all those years, I was the one calling him outside, and now he's the one calling me. As parents, we spend a lot of time thinking about what we're teaching our kids, but some of the things they pick up from us aren't things we ever sat down and tried to teach them. They see what we love and it becomes something they love too. And that's what happened with the moon, and that makes my heart so happy. I shared something that I love with him, and then somewhere along the way, he started loving it too now every once in a while, my phone buzzes, "Mom, go look at the moon." And I do. He's there, I'm here, but we're both looking up at the same moon, and that's pretty spectacular too That's your seed. Now go plant something good
